Energy Tool Kit
Welcome to the Energy Tool Kit of the FNQLSDI. The goal of this tool kit is to provide a place to learn about renewable energy and it's context and significance for the First Nations in Québec and Labrador.
How to use this tool kit?
This website consists of different pages about specific topics. Here is how to navigate them:
- You will find hyperlinks in the text, linking to other pages
- You can use the “Search”-field on the upper right
- There is a complete list of all pages in the sidebar (on mobile devices, open the menu above!)
What is renewable energy, and why is it important?
A big portion of the energy we use in our daily lives comes from fossil fuels. Using fossil fuels is harmful to our health and to nature. Above all, burning gasoline, diesel or propane emits greenhouse gases and causes catastrophic climate change.
The alternative to non-renewable, fossil fuels is renewable energy. In order to protect health, nature and land, we need to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy in the next years. This energy transition is a big challenge, but offers interesting opportunities:
- Using solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at off grid sites like camps and cabins can safe fuel costs and stops the noise and pollution of a fossil fuel generator.
- Using clean transportation like bikes, e-bikes or electric cars can save cost in fuel and in maintenance, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Well built and efficient housing saves energy costs and improves the quality of life.
- The usage of wood for heating is renewable and low in cost.
